Another one bites the dust

Three years ago - in July 2008 - I posted the news of Radovan Karadzic's arrest. People celebrated on the streets, and there was a feeling of accomplishment and hope that other war criminals would be caught soon.

Today, at the news of Ratko Mladic's arrest, the feeling is different. There are no revelers outside, people are disillusioned and disappointed in the international community and the fact that it took so long to catch the man, especially since many believe that the Serbian government knew very well where he was this entire time but was unwilling to give him up. When asked how they feel about Mladic's arrest, people shrug their shoulders and say that they doubt the arrest will make any difference. I can't help but share that feeling. It feels like too little, too late.

As soon as I heard the news I thought of you. Yes, too little too late. "Another one bites the dust" does give me a flare of satisfaction though - but easy to feel that when you're not directly involved.

People are just so disappointed, and lethargic, because for years we've been trying to change things but never really achieved anything. When Karadzic was arrested there was celebration on the streets because there was still hope, but everything's quiet today, and hope seems to have died.

I'd actually not read a single news site in days, so I hadn't heard. I know it's too late, but it's still good news. *hugs*

It's a strange feeling, because we should be happy, but then again, how can you be happy over an arrest of a man responsible for so much death and destruction when it would have been much better if he were stopped? It makes me so angry, remembering the halfhearted response of the international community: they should have air-bombed the fuckers right away instead of threatening then backing out. Yes, people would have still died, but the numbers wouldn't have been as high.

I still feel bad that I had/have very little idea what was happening right here in Europe, almost under my nose. If it wasn't for the (very patient) way you've answered my questions and explained things over the last couple of years, I suspect I'd still be as ignorant as most people are.

Da, šta sad? Kao da hapšenje i eventualna osuda mogu nešto promijeniti, kad ima toliko ljudi koji ga smatraju herojem, podržavaju ono što je radio i smatraju da je njgeovo hapšenje velika nepravda. TV ekipe su intervjuirale ljude u istočnom Sarajevu i Banja Luci i pojedini komentari su bili da će kao osveta za ovaj potez Tadić krenuti putem Đinđića. O_O Kako promijeniti mišljenje takvim ljudima, i je li to uopšte moguće?

Sve mi se to čini beznadežno...
