I had heard great things about this comic, and once it was greenlighted for a movie, I said it would be something I'd be very interested in seeing. Because, you know, in the words of io9, "A Civil War veteran who talks to the dead and has a score to settle with a guy who swiped the superweapon secretly developed by Eli Whitney? Great idea. Supernatural old west? Also great." Plus Josh Brolin ♥. I have much love for Josh Brolin.

But judging by io9's review, it's a failure.

There are two things they have most issues with: over-exposition of the death of Jonah's wife and child (a commenter said they flashback to it three times, each time using exactly the same footage!), and turning it into a terrorism-is-bad-we-must-fight-it-&-prevent-destruction-of-White-House.

You know, filmmakers, not every movie has to have a message. It's OK to make an action flick with shit blowing up, guys wanting revenge, chicks being awesome, bad guys paying for their crimes and heroes riding off into sunsets. Not every move has to be a commentary of present-day events. Sometimes we just want to immerse ourselves into a fantastic world - whether western, sci-fi, or alternate history - and forget about what's happening outside the movie theater. Or if you must make a statement with your movie, don't make it overshadow everything else that's happening in your movie, because you'll end up with a boring political pamphlet instead of a movie (no matter how awesome the special effects are).
