Sleepless

I'll be eternally grateful to whoever comes up with a cure for insomnia. I tried everything, but nothing seems to work. I finally got up, turned on my computer and started fiddling with Photoshop. The result is below:

I was getting tired of all the fics that have him as poor woobie who can't take care of himself, so I made this.

Seriously, not only is the man a good shot, he shoots well with BOTH hands, has a hidden derringer, a rifle, is damn good in a fist fight, not to mention that he knows how to use heavy artillery. Not!woobie if I ever saw one.

[identity profile] winks7985.livejournal.com 2010-02-14 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
hmmm.... i never thought of him as a woobie. can't say as i've read much fic where that comes across.

i love that he shoots with both hands equally well, but not both at the same time (like JD). i also saw somewhere that someone had put together a vid or a picspam where they went through the whole series, piecing together whether he was a lefty or a righty. and the ambidextrous thing stood out... he even wrote with both hands on the show!

It's just that I've been trying to tire myself out by reading fics. I have folders of favorite authors and then one for various, and I've been reading some of the old, old "various" ones, which had a bunch of fics where Ezra is misunderstood, or mistrusted, and ends up hurt and has to tend to his own wounds, and they mistreat him horribly and I was getting sick of those. Deleted them all.

someone had put together a vid or a picspam where they went through the whole series, piecing together whether he was a lefty or a righty

I remember that, it was a vid! I think it's somewhere on YouTube. I wonder if that was just the character, or if Tony's ambidextrous too.

[identity profile] pezgirl7.livejournal.com 2010-02-14 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of fics like that too (they normally give a warning or summary first), and it's one of the reasons I don't read fanfic. I just don't see Ezra as wimpy or getting beat up a lot, or being mistreated. Under appreciated by the other 6 sometimes, but not to the point that it causes him a mental breakdown.

Tony is ambidextrous too! I think it was his decision to add that bit of himself into his character. Here's the vid you were talking about:

Sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I have the same problem sometimes, although I think I only have myself to blame. I think it's my weird sleeping patterns that do it. If I were to go to bed and get up at the same time everyday, I probably wouldn't have that problem. Have you tried taking over-the-counter pills? They're really the only thing that helps me fall asleep, and stay asleep.

Awesome wallpaper! Love the colors and the blending of the photos.

Thank you! I was worried that the colors were a bit much, since I make it on my laptop which shows duller colors, and the colors on my desktop monitor are very vivid.

That's a nice tidbit about Tony! I wonder if that's one of Ezra's God given gifts or if it's something he learned. In any case, it makes sense to take advantage of such an asset. I wonder what it would be like to be ambidextrous...

I have weird sleeping patterns too. We don't have a textbook we'd like to use with our students, so we have to write our own lectures and that takes time. None of us goes to bed before midnight or 1 a.m., sometimes later. As a consequence, all our sleeping patterns are shot to hell. I'm desperate for a good textbook!

I tried over-the-counter pills, but my trouble is I have a strong gag reflex and it's tough even getting them past my throat. And if they're plain, un-coated tablets they tend to make me sick. :(

[identity profile] pezgirl7.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I like to think that Ezra had to acquire his ambidexterity himself. Seems like it would be very useful in his line of work.

I have trouble swallowing pills too. I always have to psych myself out, by chewing some food, and then putting the pill in my mouth right before I swallow. That way I can't feel the pill at all when it goes down.

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2010-02-14 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, most fannish woobies tend to be pretty damn tough canonically when you look at them, but Ezra is one of the toughest...

Lovely picture, but I'm so sorry for the cause, Sis gets insomnia and I know what a drag it can be :(

Yes, I imagine he's had to be tough from an early age. How fans go from "Look at how competent this man is" to "Aw, poor baby!" still baffles me, though there's been some discussion on [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants that these stories are usually written by young fans and they're basically You'll All Be Sorry when you realize how terribly you mistreated me.

:sighs: I'm conflicted, because it's so damn exhausting and I don't need this when I have a major exam on the 20th, but at least I made something, so I gas Yay? for that.

(something to be happy about: the external examiners are gone! Woot!)

[identity profile] sallymn.livejournal.com 2010-02-15 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you look at poor widdle fragile Blair Sandburg (who takes out terrorists with a snack machine in his first day on the job :), Daniel Jackson (who insults magalomaniac aliens for fun), Spencer Reid (who managed to outthink a psychopath while tortured and drugged)... the list goes on. I've even seen it with Avon (Blakes 7) who would slaughter anyone who tried to 'poor baby' him, without turning a hair. And Rodney Mckay, who is canonically armoured with a steel plate of sheer ego.

In some way I can see the appeal, it is tied to the appeal of h/c and comfort fics, but I firmly believe that you can trash them without turning them into frail and fragile (and wet and weedy weedy) flowerlets...

Wow, lovely lovely! (that's an ambidextrous comment *g*) Really I always think of Ezra as a tough cookie, which is what makes his vulnerabilities so doubly squishable. And as for the stance he's in with the flappy coat ... man's sex on legs :)

Sorry to hear about the insomnia - I sympathize.

That he is, that he is...

I just made myself some nice tea, and I hope I won't have the same problem again. It's most likely stress and the pressure of work and school. I'm just so tired all the time.

[identity profile] tpena19.livejournal.com 2010-02-14 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I often get insomnia too, it sucks. Plus I hate mornings anyway, so double suck then :P

Lovely wallpaper. That Ezra was talented! I agree, more fic needs to showcase his awesomeness.

:(

What do you do about it? Any special brand f tea? milk, hot cocoa? meditation? pills? I need to be calm and collected, but I feel like I'm on fire most days.

Thank you! He sure was. I'm hopeless when it comes to fic, I'd just run in too many directions and never get anything done, so I always hope I'll find something others have written and enjoy it.

[identity profile] tpena19.livejournal.com 2010-02-17 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I tried ambient, it works ok, but I don't want to be dependent on those kinds of pills. I used to be able to put on headphones and listen to music and that would help a lot, but not as much lately. Sometimes if I can kill the resultant headache with aspirin I can fall asleep, but not always.

I hate taking any pills and try to avoid them if I can help it. I think it's mainly the stress that's getting to me, since I've head to deal with one blow after another in a very short time. Once that's resolved I should (hopefully) be back to normal.

And, man, as I was writing this I wondered why I haven't seen anything from you on my fpage, and went to check, only to find I didn't friend you back when I meant to! :headdesk: :rectifies: I obviously need a pen and pad of paper with me at all hours.

[identity profile] tpena19.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate pills too! I have a real hard time swallowing them, even the tiny ones sometimes. My mom recently got me some multi-vitamins - she's so sure my celiac is causing deficiencies and means to fix me, she may be right, heh, who knows, anyways - they are freaking huge! (well to me they are) and I can not take them. I'm going to have to buy a pill cutter thingy, I guess.

yay to a new/old friend :D

Pronounced gag reflex here. Especially with regular, uncoated pills, which are too bitter and make me throw up. :(

I don't know about vitamins, but I do know that cutting pills is usually a very bad ides, since some are meant to dissolve in the small intestines, not your stomach because they may damage it. You should always check with your doctor whether a particular pill can be cut or not.

[identity profile] tpena19.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with all of the first bit here.

And good call! I will remember to do that before I injure myself, lol.

Oh, this is so pretty!

I love that scene with his coat flapping, too. I turn to goo every time I see it. Not just the flappy coat, but how almost... casual (?) he is in handling the gun. There's something in his casual competence in his little moments of stopping bad guys that just screams that this guy is *not to be messed with*. :)

If this is the result of insomnia....

Sorry you can't sleep, I have had my own bouts with that and it stinks. My aunt's insomnia was so bad she went on Ambien... but that just made her sleepwalk. She'd get up, eat a whole bunch of crap, and go back to bed; in the morning she'd wake up to find all kinds of wrappers all over the place! Not sure what the cure is but I empathize. :(

Anyway... Very nice wallpaper, great pic choices.

Love that you've captured the dangerous side of him, it was especially evident early on in the series. The fluttering coat is tied as my favorite cool shot of one of the boys, along with Chris coming out of the saloon in the Pilot with his duster whipping around, and JD twirling off his horse.

And the scene from 'Safecracker' where Ezra pulls his derringer is great. Really emphasized this wasn't a guy to be messed with. Tony made his eyes go so cold, there was a real sense of danger.

Great job, thanks for sharing. :)

A lot of the credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] erniemay, whose textures I often use. This one (EMTexture70) I used as is, though I often mix and match, or use just a detail. [livejournal.com profile] hgx is another artist whose textures I use often.

The fluttering coat is also one of my favorites - and not just mine, so it seems. Not surprising. :) That Safecrackes scene makes me shiver!

You're welcome, thank you for commenting!
