Oh! Well it's a major Islamic holiday. There are two actually: Eid ul-Fitr which is a three day holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, and Eid al-Adha, which comes after the Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca, and it marks the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. (It is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice in English.)

A ram is sacrificed during that time, and the meat is divided into thirds: one third is for the family that offered the sacrifice, one is for extended family, friends and neighbors, and one is for the poor and the needy. The job of distributing the meat to friends and family is often given to children, as they receive gifts such as small amounts of money or candy.

This year Eid al-Adha falls on November 16 in the Gregorian calendar.
